Traditional Classes

For all classes, Barb will bring a laptop with the Electric Quilt program so students can play with color and design before starting their quilts.

Typical class fees are about $6 per hour per student. Travel and lodging expenses will be added as appropriate.

Most of the classes are taught using Barb's patterns, not widely available elsewhere so it's a unique chance for students to see something new & exciting. The pattern cost could be built into the class fee or patterns could be sold separately.

Logs on a Roll

It starts out as a log cabin, but a simple twist adds attitude. These wonky logs are set at an angle so there is no fussy measuring and a minimum of point matching. Choose a traditional light/ dark color scheme or go scrappy.

It's a newly published pattern with an easy, relaxed design that looks great on the wall, on a bed or wrapped around a baby.

It's appropriate for all skill levels. Beginners can easily perfect log cabin block building skills. Since the center logs are at an angle, no one will notice if they are not exactly straight.

More advanced students can play with color and design to develop secondary designs and shadows. Cornerstones or sashing could be added. Anything you can do with a traditional log cabin can be done with this design, so the possibilities are endless.

Students can come to class with log cabin blocks made and go home with a finished top. Those who don't know how to make log cabins can bring just fabric, make a few blocks and finish the project at home. It works best as a 6-8 hour class.

Original patterns, designed by Barb, are used for the class. They can be included in the class fee or students can purchase them from your shop.

Beyond Basic Bindings

You've completed a beautiful top and the pattern reads "finish as desired" but you're not sure what you desire!! You only know how to do a "French Fold" binding!!

Add ZIP to your edging repertoire with techniques that are no more difficult than the basic binding. This class will expand your quilting repertoire to include piped bindings done totally by machine, scallops, inside and outside pointed edges, prairie points, envelope style, faced bindings, fused bindings and more. Students will learn how to miter corners for all the techniques. You'll never have a dull binding again.

It will also cover squaring up a top and adding borders, piping, sleeves, labels and all the finishing touches needed to make it a unique masterpiece.

And for those who don't know how to make them, French Fold bindings will be covered too. It's a wonderful finish for many projects.

This is a technique class where each student will make a sample of each of the different bindings. It can be adjusted to cover 3-6 hours. The shorter class is a lecture/demo. With longer classes, students will make samples of each binding.

Since everyone works independently and there are demonstrations throughout the day, it's a good class for all levels. No book is required and extensive handouts are given for future reference.

Cure Curve Phobia

Feeling confined by straight line piecing? Not to sure about curves? Learn to master curves in this class. Right sides together, notches and matching, freezer paper and undulating curves will all be covered. Curved bindings and edges will also be included. Students will even learn how to inset a full circle into a solid piece of fabric. It's appropriate for advanced beginners and beyond.

Students will leave with the confidence to handle curves in any pattern.

It could be taught as a 3 hour demonstration with handouts the students can follow at home. Another option is a 6-8 hour technique class where student sew a sample of each curve. For confident beginners and beyond. With either choice, handouts will be given.

It could also be taught using Barb's pattern, "Cosmic Poppies." The students would learn "right sides together" curves but all the others would be demonstrated.

Don't let the curves and complex design fool you. This class is good for confident beginners and beyond. There are few points to match and accuracy in cutting and sewing isn't important. The gentle curves are only slightly more challenging that a straight seam. Have fun playing with color and design, using the Electric Quilt program.

The finished squares come in two sizes and the quilt could be made to any size. Its spectacular made in a selection of Batiks or tone on tones.

Barbs pattern could be included in the class fee or purchased separately. About 6-8 hours are needed for this class.

This pattern could also be incorporated into the Cure Curve Phobia class.

It looks complicated but it's really just a "Drunkards Path" and "Half Square Triangle" combination. The curves are gently and you will learn some tricks to make them foolproof. The class gives confidence in designing an original color scheme. A good class for confident beginners and beyond. A 6-8 hour class.

The pattern can be purchased separately or included in the class fee. A retail pattern is coming soon.

A lovely wall hanging that's quick to make. Learn to make half square rectangles, quarter square triangles and unique pinwheels. It can easily be expanded to make a larger quilt. All skill levels are welcome. The original pattern can be included in the class fee or purchased separately. A 6-8 hour class.

Toasty Feet

A new design, featured in Quilters Newsletter Magazine in March 2005. The pattern involves piecing and strip piecing. It's a good pattern to play with colors to create dimension. Confident beginners and beyond will enjoy this class. The class is available now and a retail pattern is coming soon.

It's a good 6-8 hour class for all quilting skills. Students will not finish the quilt in class but will know how to do all the components.

So how did it get its name ?? There is a pocket on the back of the lap robe to keep your feet toasty warm.

Take a break from quilting to make these delightful stars woven from ribbon. Schedule this three hour class for November and early December so students will have them to hang for the holidays or give as gifts.

The supply list is simple-- bring a scissors and your Christmas spirit. (The ribbons and pattern are provided). We will turn up the Christmas carols, warm the cider and have a party!! You'll go home with finished stars--guaranteed. A good class for kids over about 10 years old.
